Cooperation as theme of final ART-on-a-BOX art container

The 12th and final sea container for ART-on-a-BOX will be decorated by two painters from Amsterdam and Rotterdam during the upcoming Sail 2010 event in Amsterdam. ART-on-a-BOX is a project by the Ter Haak Group and the Port of Amsterdam that started during the previous Sail event in 2005 when the first container was painted in Delft Blue by artist Hugo Kaagman. The goal of ART-on-a-BOX is to highlight Amsterdam’s function as a container port.

A unique feature of the project is that the painted containers continue to be used for cargo transport and thus travel around the world. Each container has had its own theme, including Rembrandt, cocoa and the cooperation between cultures in the Amsterdam port.

Until now all the containers were painted by artists from Amsterdam, but it was decided that the 12th and final container should be feature an Amsterdam/Rotterdam duo, Robert Vorstmann and Niels Smits van Burgst, symbolising the cooperation between the ports in both cities. The container will be unveiled during Sail 2010 at the Verbindingsdam accompanied by the other eleven ART-on-a-BOX containers. For a preview of the exhibition see www.artonabox.nl.
